What is osteoarthritis?

When the layer of cartilage between two bones degenerates over time, it can cause pain and dysfunction. This is known as osteoarthritis and can commonly happen in the hands, knees, hips and spine.

What are the risk factors for osteoarthritis?

  • Improper prolonged use of the muscles around the joint 

  • Previous injury to the joint 

  • Age (>65 years old) 

  • Gender (Females more common) 

  • Family history 

  • Being overweight

What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are: 

  • Stiffness or discomfort first thing in the morning or after periods of inactivity. 

  • Decreased ROM 

  • Headaches 

  • Hearing a crunchy, clicking sound when moving the joint.

    If the osteoarthritis gets bad enough to damage the surround nerves, then it can lead to: 

    • Weakness 

    • Numbness 

    • Muscle spasms 

    • Dizziness 

    • Incontinence
