What is bursitis?

Bursitis is a condition where inflammation occurs in the bursa which is essentially a fluid filled sac. The job of the bursa is to help reduce friction between two structures which include muscles, tendons, or bones. Bursae are found throughout the whole body but some common locations are the shoulder, hip, knee and elbow.

What are the main causes of bursitis?

When the two structures rub against one another, the bursa absorbs most of the impact. This leads to irritation and inflammation. There are many reasons why the bursae can become irritated. These include:

  • Repetitive strain

  • Overuse of the joint (due to work, sport or daily activities)

  • Improper biomechanics of the joint due to compensation.

  • Direct trauma to the joint

  • Infection

  • Inflammatory conditions such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Painful lump around the joint (due to the inflammation)

  • Pain worse with movement or inability to move (can cause a sharp pain)

  • Joint is red and hot
